The Difference Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be

1

Stuck.

Frustrated.

Disappointed.

I’ve heard these words over the past week by folks describing themselves.

Stuck in the same place they were a year ago.

Frustrated they haven’t made any progress.

Disappointed that they aren’t where they thought they would be.

(Before I go further, let me acknowledge the elephant in the room – the past 18+ months have been unlike any other our world has experienced. Things haven’t been easy, and while some have had it easier than others, the only constant we can count on is change. Back to the topic at hand.)

In each of these conversations, through a bunch of questions from me, the people I spoke with were able to paint a pretty clear picture of where they wanted to go, who they wanted to be. And that is a HUGE win. Most people just have no idea. And that’s ok too, by the way.

But if you know where you want to go and where you’re starting from, what’s stopping you?

Simple – ACTION.

Either you take action, or you don’t.

In either case, you are making a decision. You are either casting a vote for the person you are today, let’s call it “maintaining the status quo.”

Or you are making the decision for the person you want to be.

You either decide to act different from the manner that got you to where you are today, or you don’t.

The trouble that most folks have in taking action is the belief that they need to take MASSIVE action. Heck, look at your IG or FB feed and you’ll see all sorts of messaging coming your way that you are not where you want to be because you’re not working hard enough.

False.

If you want to climb Mt. Everest, you don’t take the biggest steps possible. It’s quite the opposite actually, you take the smallest steps possible, because that is what is sustainable for the long haul.

Like the images above illustrate, it’s the difference between trying to jump across a gap or lay down a plank and walk across safely.

Great coaches, and guides, know this.

But because of the mindset folks have around the BIG action they think they need to take, they miss out on the action that will actually move them forward – just one small step today. Followed by another one tomorrow, and another one the day after.

One glass of water today.

One 30 minute walk tomorrow.

One glass of water and a 32 minute walk the day after that.

In three days, that’s three votes for the person you envision yourself becoming.

Yes, it’s really that simple. It should be so easy that you can’t say no.

Because consistency trumps intensity, every time, if you’re in it for the long game.

What action can you commit to?
