Why is Goal Setting Important?

This month, chances are good that you’ve read or heard about us wanting to do athlete check-ins with you all. Steph sent out a survey via email to gather info from you guys, coaches have begun talking about them in class…it’s an exciting time!! Ok, so perhaps I’m the only nerd around here that jumps for joy about these things. Let me tell you why:

Goal setting has been an integral part of the foundation of what we do at CrossFit For Glory since we first opened in 2011. Back in the day, I used to conduct all of these myself, and most of them were done informally – side conversations between sets of squats or even post-workout while you were trying to stuff your heart back into your chest cavity. You get the picture. I know our OG members remember this; my mom, Stephanie Ball, Tabrez, JScott, Erika and Mark James – ask them.

As we continued to grow, scraps of paper would disappear and my memory could only contain so much. It was at a mentor’s prompting that I realized we needed a more formal and trackable way to do these. So in 2016, I wrote a post titled simply ‘The Importance of Goals.’ You should definitely go back and read it, it remains one of our most popular blogs of all time…according to ‘the google.’

My goal (no pun intended, I promise) with that post was just to bring attention to the fact that this was an included part of their membership and why it was so darn important to use it!

Gym owners, well all business owners really, are famous for thinking that if we’ve said something one time that everyone heard it, remembers it, and thinks about it all the time. Not the case at all.

At the end of that post I put a link to my calendar for people to book appointments with me. I genuinely didn’t think I’d get many. Man, was I ever wrong; within 24 hours of that post going live, I had 60, yes SIXTY, appointments scheduled over the next couple weeks. The craziest one? Someone from Virginia read my post, booked an appointment, and flew down to meet with me.

So, why should you care about participating?

If you aren’t focused and working towards something, you’ll always be searching for the ‘next thing’ and a year from now you’ll be right where you are.

Perhaps you set a goal and reached it – we want to celebrate that with you!! We also want to help you lay out a plan for your next goal. We do these in 3-month chunks of time. Why? 90-days is the sweet spot when it comes to setting, and attaining, a goal. It’s a long enough time to make it a challenge, but short enough that you can see the finish line.

Never set a goal before? GREAT! There is no time like the present and that’s what we’re here for. (And yes, just showing up consistently is a fantastic goal to have!)
