Ok gang, it’s that time again! That’s right, we are kicking off another weightlifting specialty course. For those that haven’t been around too long, read below to find out all you need to know. For those that have been eagerly awaiting this, you better scroll down to the bottom and click the sign up link…you know how quick these spots sell out and we only allow NINE people in each class!
Oh and if just getting better at the lifts wasn’t enough, remember what kicks off in just a few short weeks – that’s right, the 2018 CrossFit Games Open!!!! You just KNOW that a max effort lift will show up…might as well dial in your technique now.
Last thing…every person, every single person, who has taken this course has PR’d at the end…

Over the past couple of years, our USA Weightlifting Club “CFG Barbell” has grown by leaps and bounds. What started off as just a few folks going to local meets grew to us finding success at the local, National, and finally International stage! More than a year ago in Germany, for instance, CFG Barbell athlete Shannon Whiteman took home the Gold Medal and has set quite a few records.
But the beginnings of any journey into this great sport, long before someone actually steps onto the competition platform, begins with learning the basics of how to move a barbell efficiently. In knowing this, we created a ‘beginners course’ last year to focus precisely on the building blocks.
This program is intended for anyone interested in learning more about Olympic Weightlifting, the snatch and clean & jerk. This will be 12 hours of specialized, intimate coaching over the 5 weeks. There will be athlete specific programming based on deficiencies and areas that need to be improved upon.
I’m sure some of you that have been with us for a while are wondering – “Is a Level 1 course for me?” I would turn it around and ask yourself this: “Can I benefit from focusing on the fundamentals?” Even if you don’t desire to turn this into a competitive aspiration, there is no denying that anybody doing CrossFit, or any fitness program, can benefit from learning these lifts in a more structured and safe environment.
The focus here will be on building motor patterns through deliberate repetition. As I’m sure you’ve heard – “Practice makes permanent.” We want that ‘permanent’ to be sound, efficient, and safe technique. And we want to see you set some new PRs!
Here are some of the things that you can expect to be emphasized:
- Snatch
- Clean & Jerk
- Accessory Work
- How to warm-up for max effort lifts
- Differences between power and full variations
Our first class will be held on Tuesday evening, January 23rd @ 8pm.
Classes will be held every Tuesday at 8pm and Saturday morning at 8am. They will be 1 hour in length.
Cost for the 5-week course is $155 for members (This will include access to our Open Gym hours to complete your specific additional programming.)
The final class, Tuesday February 20th, will be a mock weightlifting meet where we will test your 1RMs in a more formal setting!
Finally, this course will be limited to just 9 people and is available on a first-come, first-served (or signed up!) basis. Here is a link to secure your spot if you’re a member.
Questions? Ask a Coach next time you’re in…or better yet, ask one of the many athletes who participated last year!
