A couple weeks ago, there was an article on HuffPost about “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” with regards to CrossFit. I encourage you all to read it as it’s quite informative.
Naturally, I’m inclined to defend CrossFit, but only to a point. While Coach Ripp (as he’s known to followers, of which I am) does come across as a bitter old man on a fairly anit-CrossFit rant, he does make plenty of valid points that are all worthy of consideration.
Thankfully, we’re (CrossFit For Glory) part of neither “The Bad” nor “The Ugly.” Here are a few rebuttals, if you can even call them that:
– We most certainly classify ALL of you as athletes, we’ve written as such. That is why what we do isn’t “just exercise.” Whether you know it or not, ALL OF YOU are training with direction and purpose.
– We encourage, well pretty much require, that you all be working towards some sort of goal. And if you may not have a specific one for yourself, no worries, we have plenty that we are always pushing you to, whether you know it or not.
– We also happen to know a thing or two about blending traditional strength and conditioning with good old-fashioned CrossFit programming. This is nothing revolutionary, although many boxes just don’t seem to understand the science behind it. I’m glad we do.
– And lastly, we have coaches with more than just a “weekend cert” behind them as showcases of their experience and credentials. We recognize that not all CrossFits are created equal and feel that it is partly our job to not only educate you, the athlete, on that but also to educate the general public so that there isn’t a negative connotation of our awesome sport, or worse, a classification of what we do as a dangerous/injurious way to achieve optimal health and fitness.
So fear not, my fellow athletes, you are in quite capable and intelligent hands.
